Interview with a Zingerman's Event Planner
Zingerman’s Catering and Events has delivered great food to gatherings of all sorts over the years. They’ve rubbed elbows with famous musicians while providing the backstage treats at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival and donated their time and food to the American Cancer Society at the annual Cattlemen’s Ball. But maybe the most fun they have is when they get the chance to make a happy couple’s wedding day as special as it can be. Zingerman’s News sat down with Paul Metler, Director of Catering Sales, and asked him to shed a little light on why weddings are so much fun.

So, what can Zingerman’s do to make a wedding reception unique?
The food is phenomenal. Our kitchen puts extra care into the flavor and eye appeal of each dish. Unlike many caterers, we can provide complete Wedding Planning for the whole celebration, the rehearsal dinner, gifts for hotel guests, pre-wedding brunch, setting up the wedding space, the reception, post-wedding brunch and to-go food for the happy couple. We partner with the Bakehouse, Roadhouse, Creamery and Coffee company to arrange specially prepared treats. We can arrange the flowers, creative decorations, service, entertainment, venue, valet parking, complete planning and amazing food. We have served weddings with 30 guests to over 250, from small intimate backyard events to grand affairs at the The Michigan Theater. We have served couples in Grand Rapids, Cleveland, Toledo and beyond. The Bakehouse cake artists meet directly with the couple and design cakes that complement everything we provide. We can arrange special party favors like handblown glass bottles of aged balsamic vinaigrette flown in from Italy, or hand-made truffles created by Grocer’s Daughter Chocolate in Empire, Michigan.

Do you have a favorite wedding story?
Of the ones I can tell, perhaps the Cabot/MacDougald wedding which was held in a tent in their backyard. The groomsmen, dressed in kilts, threw bocci balls, a bag piper played and people danced on the roof of their home. The couple was married under a spreading oak tree festooned with ribbons and lights. We decorated the interior of the tent with Japanese lanterns.

We served a couple in Auburn Hills, who selected a menu with dishes from 5 countries. We set up stations around the perimeter of the reception space with food from Germany, Spain, France, Greece, and Italy. We hired a florist who imported flowers and decorative plants from each of those countries.

What’s the most frequently requested item from all the weddings you’ve catered?
Space. There are limited spaces for receptions in Washtenaw County. We are currently negotiating with some new and exciting locations, so stay tuned. The Lex Chicken which comes with Creamy Au Gratin potatoes is the most ordered hot food item, and just about everyone wants cheeses.

What’s the most interesting request you’ve fulfilled?
We had a wedding where the groom was Mexican and the bride was Russian. They decided to plan their wedding only two weeks before the happy day. We used dishes, tables and linens that belonged to the bride’s mother. They served dinner in a refurbished chicken coop and hung silk in their barn. We painted the inside of an outbuilding and even arranged to have a tent an hour before the ceremony… on a Sunday. After the ceremony a mariachi band played while we prepared paella on their deck.

What’s the best way for a couple to get started on a wedding catered by Zingerman’s?
Give me a call, I would be happy to discuss possibilities or email us here. The initial meeting can take about 2 hours, but you will have a good idea of the costs involved once we are finished. If we plan to meet at the Bakehouse, we can combine a consultation with our cake artist Kim at the same time.

“Having Zingerman’s cater our wedding was one of the best decisions we made. The food was beautifully presented, the service was attentive and professional. But even more important, working with Zingerman’s is always fun. Knowing that the catering was in such good hands took away a great deal of the anxiety that usually surrounds wedding planning.”
